Blue Bamboo provides career advice to 7th Student CILT Conference (London Region)< Greenwich University
Blue Bamboo Consulting supported Langley Search & Selection at the recent 7th Annual Student Conference held at University of Greenwich. Neil Syred, Head of Supply Chain Recruitment from Langley Search & Selection, provided career advice to MA/MSc students as they moved towards finishing their qualifications.Syred outlined his view of the current employment market, guided students on how they might think through options on their future career paths and how to prepare themselves for the job market.
Edward Luttrell, Director and Principal Coach from Blue Bamboo answered a wide range of questions about employment potential and the very real challenges ahead. Many students were keen to know how they might present themselves as a viable option to employers, even though their professional experience had been accrued oversees. Luttrell commented: “Whilst it is true that many UK employers look for UK experience, presenting alternative skills and knowledge is key; my advice is to run a ‘self-audit’ and identify all the ‘value added’ things that you could bring to a prospective employer. The best employers recognise the very real advantage of recruiting innovation, creativity, raw talent and enthusiasm. Often these personal qualities out-weigh experience during a recruitment round”
The discussion also turned to outlining different types of assessment by potential employers including competency based interviewing. Syred and Luttrell also outlined techniques to enable students to become an ‘employee of choice’ to potential recruiters, such as establishing and maintaining rapport with the interviewer – essential in any job interview situation.
Sid Foster, Chair of the CILT London Region commented to Langley, “Thank you very much for your attendance at the 7th Annual Students Event. I hope that you enjoyed it as much as the students seemed to – a very valuable addition to the day – please come back next year to present at our 8th event planned for next year.”
